Full Description
Moat, rectangular on Ordnance Survey.
Overgrown with dense brushwood.
E. Rose (NAU) 20 February 1978.
Site lies in small enclave of woodland about 300m north of West Rudham Church.
Moat rectangular, measuring about 45m north to south, about 30m east to west broadening to northwest corner.
Moat is dry.
Whole site covered with scrub and mature trees with much fallen wood.
Banks damaged in places by uprooting.
Earthworks noted in field west of Grove Farm.

2 November 1992. Found in roots of fallen tree within moat.
Large rim sherd from large 13th century jar, non Grimston but local ware, thumb impressed rim.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA).

Visited to monitor effectiveness of Section 17 Agreement.
Much of the scrub/trees on the east and west sides of the moat has been cut, with cuttings heaped up.
Work needed on north and south sides.

Perimeter of moated area now almost free of scrub and trees, nettles colonizing this ground.
More wood to be removed from moat and interior during winter.
Ten man days work already undertaken.

Further removal of some dead wood, and cutting of overhanging branches, especially willow, will be undertaken shortly under terms of Section 17 Agreement.

Part of south bank to east, and north bank clear with some grass and low annual weed.
Remainder much dead wood in moat and on sides.
A little rabbit disturbance.
Further cutting back will be undertaken.
