Map

Cropmarks apparently indicated on (S1), but no details given.
E. Rose (NLA).

If this refers to the 1946 RAF air photographs, there are some very faint linear and 'block' marks, most or which may only be removed field boundaries, but some may be worth further examination.
E. Rose (NLA), 5 June 2000.

August 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The feature appears as an irregular arrangement of amorphous, semi linear light coloured areas with a parched appearance (S2) that may represent piles of upcast. The site has an overall east to west length of 72m and a maximum north to south length of 69m. On 1946 photographs (S3) there are darker areas visible between the lighter parched areas, which may represent silted up pits or solution features. It is possible that these features represent a geologically natural phenomenon, such as a sinkhole or solution hole, although the appearance of the feature would suggest some form of anthropogenic disturbance has taken place on the site. The irregular layout of the features may be consistent with small scale, piecemeal chalk extraction. The date of the possible extraction is unknown, and indeed it may be multi-period. Extraction could have taken place at any time from the Roman period onwards. Only the extents of the feature have been mapped. This site number was assigned specifically for cropmarks of unknown form, although there are no other obvious discernible cropmarks within this site boundary.
M. Brennand (NMP), 30 August 2002.
