Summary

This is the site of the medieval chapel of St Mary's. A 19th century barn now stands on the site. Medieval and post medieval pottery and metalwork have been found on the site by metal detecting and fieldwalking.

Site of St Mary's Chapel.
Chapel was given in deed by Bartholemew de Brancaster to West Dereham Abbey.
Formerly dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
Chaplains recorded from 1314 to 1328.
Dissolved in the first year of the reign of Edward VI and became house; part of roof remained on east in 1775 but now gone.
19th century clunch and galleting barn stands on site, with house to north: no trace of reused masonry.
Owners have found nothing in area.

OS antiquity symbol is on barn, context 2 at TF 7267 0239, as noted above, but A. Rogerson (NLA) suggests correct location is context 1 at TF 7259 0240.

September 1998. Metal detecting finds. Context 2. In area of chapel.
Copper alloy 15th century rectangular buckle frame, angular section, possible very shallow groove for pin rest.
Copper alloy ring thimble with 4 rows of triangular stamps. Probably 17th century.
Probably 17th century decorative plaque. Facing male and female heads over crown and 2 fleur-de-lis. Two figures in central classical drinking scene. Possibly commemorating William and Mary.
