Map

Only half in Norfolk, longitudinally. Dug in early 19th century along pre-medieval course of Great Ouse to join the Nene at Wisbech with the Old Nene at Outwell. Never a success because of the difficulty of maintaining a head of water. Filled in in 1970s, now a 'linear village green' (informant). Actually opened 1794, closed 1939. Information from Ordnance Survey.
For details of Act of Parliament, construction and course see (S1).
E. Rose (NAU), 10 August 1981.

Noted in (S2), though it is confusingly said to follow the line of the Well Creek (no sorry, it says the Well Stream = Old Ouse/Nene) (see NHER 14418) though the Old Ouse is clearly meant. According to this account, houses were demolished that had been built over the river bed.
Though begun in 1794 it did not actually open until 1796, and effectively closed in 1926 though not legally until 1939.
E. Rose (NAU), 24 November 1986.
