Summary

An undated elongated mound is visible as a low earthwork on 1988 aerial photographs. The area immediately to the west has been identified as a Romano-British iron working site (NHER 24120) and surface finds of slag on this mound might suggest that it is a spoilheap of smelting or metal-working waste

HER 24120.
Information (S1).
A. Gregory, 18 December 1987.

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The mound is elongated in plan with rounded ends and is aligned with its long axis in an approximate north-east to south-west direction. The entire mound has a length of 165m, although it may actually be two conjoined mounds with lengths of 41m and 110m respectively. The mound is situated on the 5m contour, on the first area of land to be elevated above the saltmarsh, and is therefore less likely to be a saltern mound. This area to the immediate west has been identified as a Romano-British iron working site (NHER 24120) and surface finds of slag on the mound might suggest that this is a spoilheap of smelting or metal working waste. The excessive size might suggest that poor quality ore is being sourced from the local carstone deposits, causing relatively large piles of waste, rather than longevity of the metalworking operation.
M. Brennand (NMP), 30 October 2002.
