Summary

Field boundaries and at least one possible trackway, of unknown date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. They appear to represent more than one phase of activity, and may date to the Iron Age to Roman period, as they appear very similar to co-axial field systems identified elsewhere in this part of Norfolk (see NHER 6096, 21271 and 49400). These features appear to continue into fields to the south and east. The latest elements are depicted on 19th century maps.

Map

Cropmarks of field system on different alignment to existing pattern. (S1)
Located by E. Rose (NAU) 6 January 1978.

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 4279 1149 to TG 4306 1126.

The cropmarks described above, representing field boundaries and possibly a trackway, are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3). (NMP mapping has significantly extended the limits of the site, although features visible to the northwest, which were originally included within the site [see old paper 1:10,000 overlay], look more like drainage features than archaeology and have been excluded.) More than one phase of activity appears to be represented. The latest elements are depicted on historic maps, such as Stokesby with Herringby Tithe Map (S4), and are presumably of post medieval date, as are those elements which follow the modern pattern of enclosure in terms of orientation, etc. Other elements of the site, which have a different, northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest orientation, may represent an earlier phase of land division, perhaps associated with sites to the southeast where finds of all periods have been recovered and a Roman period settlement and Late Saxon metalworking site are suspected (principally recorded under NHER 41010). A possible trackway (visible between TG 4296 1144 and TG 4322 1125), which appears to belong to this postulated earlier phase of activity, may lead towards the settlement and metalworking site.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 29 May 2007.

March 2009.
Investigation of the site using images available on Google Earth suggests that it may form part of a Late Iron Age-Roman co-axial field system as suggested above, which continues towards site 41010 to the southeast.
E. Bales (NLA), 10 March 2009.
