Summary

The 18th century façade of this building hides a 17th century or earlier building. The façade contains reset medieval stone windows. Inside are 17th century timber framed partitions with wall paintings that were revealed in 1994. The building may be a post Dissolution house built reusing monastic masonry and partly reconstructed in 18th century.

The Newsagents, High Street. Third house south of Priory Gate.
Building with 18th century facade containing reset medieval stone windows. Interior includes 17th century timber framed partitions with traces of wall paintings. Extensive wallpainting revealed in 1994. Further examination suggests building may be post Dissolution house reusing monastic masonry, and part reconstructed in 18th century.

February 1979. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description:
Early C18 brick front to C17 or earlier building. Pantile roof with gabled ends, part with brick dentil eaves; 2 storeys and basement. Seven windows, mostly sashes with glazing bars, ground floor of No 42 has thick lazing bars, ground floor of No 40 has 2-light sash, one light with thick glazing bars. First floor of No 42 has three 2-light ovolo-moulded wood mullion/transom casements with leaded panes. No 38 has small early C20 shop. No 40 glazed and panelled door, No 42 small late C19 3-light shop window with cornice and panelled door with 6 panes with thick glazing bars. At rear of No 40, incorporated into wall a stone dripmould probably from the Abbey. Said to have vaulted brick cellars.
