Summary

Excavations in 1979 revealed a substantial masonry wall with two double rectangular openings, perhaps cupboards, beneath the wall of a post medieval house (NHER 12081). The excavated wall formed the the north side of a building, the south, east and west walls of which were not located. Pottery finds suggest that the structure was occupied from the 13th/14th to the 15th centuries.

Map

Before June 1971 (KLM accession number suggests 1967 or earlier). Casual discovery, Maid's Head, Market Lane.
Grimston and Yorkshire jug sherds with 17th/18th century red wares. Most of the material was retained by the finder but some given to King's Lynn Museum.

A. Carter (KLAS).

June 1977.
On this site (now an overgrown area with derelict stables) 'treasure hunters' excavated two flint and mortar walls, about 1.5m (5 feet) deep. Apparently medieval, running north to south under south wall of the building to the north (NHER 12081) and under area to south.
Information from R. Trett (KLM).

6 July 1977. Site visited but hole had been filled in.
To the southwest, part of a ?cellar had been exposed under about 0.6m (2 feet) of earth: probably 19th century. Finds from these holes identified as two handled mugs with yellow glaze decorated with vertical lines in dark brown glaze, and 18th century stoneware, stem of wineglass and glass bottles.
E. Rose (NAU).

June to August 1979. Excavation.
Re-exposed double rectangular stone framed opening, previously described as window and noted under NHER 12081 which is the 19th century warehouse above it. Feature was shown to be a cupboard and part of a large stone building extending under NHER 1159; fragment of another cupboard revealed, also walls and floor levels with charcoal, with evidence of flooding in between. Beneath building were wooden stakes etc.
Finds were medieval coarseware, Grimston jugs and internally glazed bowl sherds, stoneware and near-stone ware, and post medieval sherds. The structure had been filled in before the end of medieval period and there was little post 16th century activity.
A will of 1307 mentions a stone house in this area. The finds suggest the structure was occupied during the 13th/14th to 15th centuries.
