Summary

A group of red brick buildings, opened in 1858 as a house of mercy for fallen women. The four wings of the group are arranged in the form of a crucifix, the west and north wings dating to the 1850s, the east and south wings to the 1860s. A separate house for the sisters was built in 1876. There is a chapel to the south to which a circular west extension was added in the 1890s. Further additions were made in 1955.

This was built as a house of mercy for fallen women on the lines of Clewer, by Henry Woodyer.
It was originally at Shipmeadow.
(S1) suggests the cruciform plan may be religious or may be inspired by John Browne's Norfolk workhouses.

The exact dates are; Foundation stone laid 1856; opened 1859 at St Michael's. East and south wings added 1864, Lodge and gate 1859, orphanage added between 1862 and 1864; later a school added. (S1).
