Summary

Features most likely relating to the site of Lexham medieval manor are visible as cropmarks, soilmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and on visualised lidar data. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features visible on the visualised lidar data still survive as low earthworks. The features include a moat, a series of probable field boundaries, boundary banks, boundary ditches, and rectilinear enclosures.

Map

Moat.
Ditches marked on Ordnance Survey are part of a large moated site, that of Lexham Manor, according to [1], who says he had it infilled with rubble some years ago.
E. Rose (NAU), 7 April 1978.

Ditches shown to east of this on RAF air photograph (date unknown) are outer enclosure; site was manor house of East Lexham.
Information from [2].
W. Milligan (NCM), 27 June 1985.

Air photograph is 1946 RAF aerial photograph shows square of ditches east of those marked on Ordnance Survey, and part of smaller enclosure to south; these two could constitute the moated site and the ditches shown on Ordnance Survey be nothing to do with it.
E. Rose (NAU) and D. Edwards (NAU), 9 February 1987.

A similar story is indicated by Thermal Infra red Linescan Imagery of February 1993.
D. Edwards (NLA), 28 January 1994.

19 July 1996. NLA air photography.

Features most likely relating to the site of Lexham medieval manor are visible as cropmarks, soilmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and on visualised lidar data (S1-S7). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features visible on the visualised lidar data (S6) still survive as low earthworks. The features include a moat, a series of probable field boundaries, boundary banks, boundary ditches, and rectilinear enclosures. The features most likely date to the medieval period. However, a post medieval date for some of the features cannot be ruled out. A series of post medieval to modern drainage features (not mapped) are also visible across the area on the aerial photographs (S1-S2) and the visualised lidar data (S6). It is possible that some of the mapped features interpreted as being archaeological in origin, could relate to post medieval to modern drainage features. The monument polygon has been updated to the extent of the features as seen on the consulted aerial sources (S1-S7)
