Summary

Earthworks of a possible Late Saxon to medieval saltern mound are visible on aerial photographs. Animal bone and pottery of Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval date have previously been recovered from this mound. It is possible that it is a saltern mound of Late Saxon to medieval date. Other possible saltern mounds are located nearby (NHER 42197 and 8, 42445).

'Many years' before 1981.
Seen in digging dyke.
Large mound, higher than finder (1.67m or 5 foot 6 inches), cut by dyke, and now levelled. Contained pottery and bones.

Thetford type two jar rims, twelve body sherds, three flat bases.
One Early medieval jar rim.
Thirty seven medieval unglazed.
One Langerwehe stoneware.
Four glazed red earthenware.
Many large and fresh sherds.

Earthworks of a possible Late Saxon to medieval saltern mound are visible on aerial photographs (S1 to S3). This mound is located at TG 4615 0685. It has an irregular sub oval plan and measures 51m long by 28m wide. Animal bone and pottery of Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval date have previously been recovered from this mound. It is possible that it is a saltern mound of Late Saxon to medieval date. Other possible saltern mounds are located nearby (NHER 42197 and 8, 42445).
