Summary

A 15th century doorway with a stone pointed arch is the last standing reminder of a medieval timber framed house that once stood on the site. The house (NHER 63530) collapsed in 1952, and the arched doorway was incorporated into a modern wall.

December 1970. Listed, Grade II.
Doorway to former house (21 St Nicholas' Street, Bennett's Yard (NHER 63530)). Probably 15th century. Brick with ashlar dressings. Blocked stone double hollow-chamfered pointed arch, deeply undercut. Flint in spandrels. Rear with two late 20th century brick walls converting use to storage bay for refuse bins. The house, which was timber-framed, collapsed in 1952.

July 1977. Site visit.
The arch was formerly set in a flint wall. It is flush against the street, and is blocked with 17th century brick.

Revised 1993 (S1) prefers a 15th century date. It belonged to a timber framed house that collapsed in 1952.
