Summary

This is the site of a jettied two-storey building which collapsed in 1952. The only remaining element was a 15th century stone archway leading to Bennett's Yard, which is recorded separately (NHER 12016). This building may have been contemporary with the stone archway, or perhaps slightly later.

A drawing dating from around 1850 and reproduced in (S3) depicts this building as rendered, two storeys and attic, with a first floor jetty. The drawing shows that the building may have had stone footings, and that there had been considerable alterations made to the building by this date. Three doorways are shown on the drawing, the westernmost being the surviving masonry doorway which gave access to Bennett's Yard (NHER 12016). The arch is thought to date from the 15th century but it is not clear whether it was related to an earlier building on the site or whether it suggests a 15th century date for the rest of the structure. Its nature may suggest it gave access to something of higher status, perhaps a hall, but there is no evidence to support this idea. It is unclear why there were two other entrances but it is possible that at least one of them may have provided access to a shop as seen at the adjacent Black Goose public house (NHER 63529).
