Full Description
1983 or before. Stray Find.
1 Mesolithic flint tranchet axe with three-sided borer flaked on butt end. Slightly stained over white patina. Made of grey flint. Fresh condition with no lustre. See drawing (S1).
Compiled by J. Wymer (NCM), 19 September 1983.
Information from (S2). This discovery was reported in (S3).
This object was subsequently donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1983.327), although there has clearly been some confusion as it is listed in their records as being from Old Buckenham (NHER 19763). The Norfolk Archaeological Index record card for this Old Buckenham site describes the object found there as an "odd buff coloured flint axe with tapering butt of Danish form". The grid reference marked on the object itself (TM 1315 9174) and its accompanying label do however both suggest that it was indeed from Bunwell. The explanation for this confusion is unclear, although it seems likely that the descriptions in both records refer to the same object.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 October 2014.
January 1992. Metal-detecting.
2 medieval coins, 1 key and 1 copper alloy seal matrix.
See file for details.
D. Gurney (NLA), 22 January 1992. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 14 January 2014.
