Summary

A group of linear ditches of probable medieval to post medieval date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Some of the ditches share an orientation with a complex of trackways and field boundaries of this date visible approximately 50m to their south (NHER 27263). Others fit the pattern of enclosure depicted on 19th century and modern maps and these are likely to be of late post medieval or modern date.

NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 489 152 to TG 4897 1527.

A group of linear ditches, probably representing former field boundaries and similar agricultural features, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1) to (S4). They are undated but many of them share the same orientation as field boundaries and trackways visible to their south (NHER 27263) which are likely to be of medieval to post medieval date. Some of these overlie a ring ditch (NHER 42237), probably the site of a Bronze Age barrow. Other ditches, oriented approximately north to south (e.g. the ditch visible between TG 4893 1533 and TG 4889 1524) seem to fit the pattern of enclosure depicted on 19th century and modern maps, such as the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S5), and these are likely to date to the late post medieval or modern period.

It should be noted that due to a lack of suitable control points the rectification of photograph (S1) was poor, and that consequently the accuracy of the mapping may have been reduced.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 20 December 2005.
