Summary

A World War Two pillbox and a spigot mortar emplacement have been identified as surviving structures through field visits. They are also visible on aerial photographs dating from 1943. The pillbox is a Type 24 and has been recorded as dating from 1940-41. The spigot mortar emplacement is thought to date to 1940. They form part of a network of World War Two anti-invasion defences around Mundesley, which was heavily defended during the war.

Map

Pill box.
Concrete faced with brick; hexagonal; stepped loopholes..
Poor condition.
Seen E. Rose (NAU) 18 October 1978.

Clearance of undergrowth revealed a mortar spigot also.

April 1986. Visited.
This may well be the same as an entry by the Pillbox Survey (who also note above) for a polygonal pill box 'high up overlooking railway on building site/private road' formerly wrongly placed at site 18470, in fact located on opposite side of railway to this.
That side of the railway is indeed now built over but is not a private road, and never overlooked the railway to any height; whereas this location does so and is marked 'private road'.
No pill box found on other side railway or known there by local inhabitants before building.
E. Rose (NAU), 9 April 1986.

See record form in file by source [1], who adds:
Quite common 1940/41 type 24 pillbox facing south on old MGN railway line. Spigot mortar base situated in undergrowth 10m southeast.
Survey Nos H1-4, H1-5.
D.Walker (NLA), August 1996.

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 3073 3630 to TG 3075 3628.

The pillbox and the spigot mortar emplacement described above are visible as extant structures on aerial photographs (S1 to 3). The pillbox is centred at TG 3075 3628 and is first visible on photographs taken in 1943 (S4). The emplacement is not clearly visible on any of the consulted aerial photographs, but can first be made out on those taken in 1946 (S1). The pillbox is still visible as an extant building on the latest consulted aerial photographs, taken in September 1988 (S5). The spigot mortar emplacement is not visible at this date but may be obscured by vegetation.
(S1 to 5)
