Summary

It has been recorded that there are a series of underground brick chambers and tunnels, probably of 17th century date, extending into the hillside on this site. They appear to have been designed for filtering and providing flow of water, but the reason for their positioning here is obscure. Of a similar date is Lodge Hill Farmhouse, a farmhouse of the later 17th century, which was extended in the 18th century and remodelled in the 19th century. This two storey building is constructed in carstone with brick dressings, in a lobby entrance plan. The steeply pitched roof was replaced around 1946, although there is an original central chimneystack with four rectangular shafts. Attached to the north is an 18th century cottage with an off-centre door and a steeply pitched roof.
