Full Description
1983. Building Survey during partial demolition.
Timber framed house altered with brick facade about 1800. Demolished rear wing produced 16th century mullions and reused medieval monastic stone. Grimston ridge tile (Carter type 2) and glazed red earthenware found under floors.
See (S1) in file.
E. Rose (NAU), 15 November 1983.
The building was clearly originally one property. In the south-east corner of the building, supporting the upper floor is a dragonbeam, crudely cut. There was however no other evidence of a jetty either underbuilt or cut back (S1). The rear wing had been demolished but the author of (S1) was told that during demolition a five-light mullioned window had been discovered. Six or seven blocks of reused stone were also found, one reported as being like the apex of the arch. Two that were seen by the author appeared to be 15th to 16th century. The reused stone suggests a construction date shortly after the Dissolution of 1536.
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 22 November 2018.
