Map

1980. Field Observation.
Atlas Aggregates Pit visited by J. J. Wymer.
Up to 4m of evenly bedded flint gravel was observed in the pit.
1 broken, very rolled Palaeolithic flint flake was found on one of the refuse heaps.
Information from (S1) and (S2). This flake (W4201) is now part of the Wymer Collection held by Royal Holloway. In (S2) Wymer mistakenly associates this pit with a number of late 19th century discoveries; these were almost certainly made in one of the former pits to the south-west (NHER 2266).
P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2013.

14 May 1981. Stray Finds.
5 Palaeolithic flint flakes found by [1]. These finds were previously recorded under NHER 2268 but as they are described as being from the Atlas Aggregates Pit whey were presumably found at this site. Four are clearly from the gravel as they are rolled and stained. One is in sharp condition, this said to have come from the clay at south end of the pit. Gravel overlies Nar Valley clay marine deposit of Hoxnian date here, which is an unlikely provenance for flake. Information from (S3). These finds are now held by the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2001.167).
Information from (S3). Also noted on (S4).
J. Wymer (NAU), 20 December 1985. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2013.
