Full Description
Bank noted here 1.2m (4ft) high. Finder wondered about its significance. (NCM card).
2 August 1978. Visit by E. Rose (NAU).
Bank is really the edge of the high ground above the flood plain; it is 1.2m (4ft) high on the west but only 0.3-0.6m (1-2ft) high on the east. However between it and road to north is a hollow way, parallel to road then diverging southwest - droveway to ford when Red Bridge narrower? (Now a modern concrete bridge).
E. Rose (NAU).
November 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of probable post medieval banks and drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs on the east and west sides of the River Thet at Shropham. It is possible that these earthworks include those recognised previously and described above as an earthwork bank and ‘droveway’. It is not clear, however, whether the possible droveway relates in fact to a field boundary depicted on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map, or to linear ditches of probable post medieval to modern drainage, which is all that could be distinguished from the aerial photographs. The earthworks have therefore been recorded separately as NHER 57465.
E. Ford (NMP), 08 November 2012.
