Full Description
November 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of probable post medieval banks and drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5) on the east and west sides of the River Thet at Shropham. It is likely that these earthworks include those recognised previously and recorded as an earthwork bank and ‘droveway’ (NHER 9055). It is not clear, however, whether the possible drove way relates in fact to a field boundary depicted on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map, or to linear ditches of probable post medieval to modern drainage, which is all that could be distinguished from the aerial photographs.
The site is centred on TL 9974 9219, and certainly seems to consist mainly of post medieval drainage ditches. The linear banks depicted may relate to earlier field bondaries, or to property boundaries to the west of the north-south road, and therefore may be medieval to post medieval in date, although they were rather faint and ephemeral, and have been recorded with a note of caution.
E. Ford (NMP), 08 November 2012.
