Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting at this site between 1983 and 2019 has recovered prehistoric worked flints; Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery; a medieval roof tile; undated copper alloy casting waste; Roman and medieval coins; post-medieval jettons; a post-medieval token and a range of other, Late Iron Age/Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Late Iron Age/Roman scabbard chape; Roman brooches, distorted cosmetic spoons, a centre-looped cosmetic pestle, tweezers and copper alloy nails or studs; a Late Saxon to post-medieval lead spindle whorl; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval harness pendant, composite harness mount and scabbard chape; a medieval/post-medieval rumbler bell and copper alloy vessel fragment and a post-medieval crotal bell and lead stud. The nature of the Iron Age pottery assemblage suggests that this may have been the site of an Iron Age settlement.
