Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting at this location between 1985 and 2021 recovered prehistoric flint flakes; Roman, Late Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery; medieval metal-working debris (probably waste from casting of bells); medieval and post-medieval coins; a post-medieval token and a number of other metal objects, including medieval buckles, a signet ring and coin weight and a post-medieval spoon and lead cloth seal.

20 March 1985. Field [1] (two fields on 6in Ordnance Survey map (S1)).
Field was divided into four quarters; 20m transects over well weathered ploughed surface; no concentrations; manure scatter.
Quadrant 1 (southwest): Seven sherds medieval unglazed, one rim late medieval transistional bowl.
Quadrant 2 (southeast): one base, one rim, three sherds medieval unglazed; two sherds post medieval greenglazed; near northwest corner of quadrant a slag fragment, bronze and speculum inclusion probably waste from bellcasting ([1] to report).
Quadrant 3 (northwest): seven sherds medieval unglazed, two undated grey sherds.
Quadrant 4 (northeast): one scrap ?Roman greyware; one flat base ?Roman or Thetford type?; one rim fragment Thetford type ware jar; four sherds medieval unglazed; one handle and two sherds ?glazed Grimston; one base like late medieval transitional; one post medieval sherd green glazed.

Object from quadrant two described by [2] as 'irregular lump of metal shown by X-ray flouresence to be bronze with some lead. Silvery surface suggests high tin alloy like bell metal, so probably from bellcasting'.

Two post medieval coins.
Post medieval lead cloth seal. The solid disc has a stamp '34', probably the length of cloth; annular disc and rivet stamped 'WB' with a tree between the letters, the mark of the clothier or weaver. Probably 17th century.
