Full Description
30 November 1983. Fenland fieldwalking. Rough ploughed but well weathered field.
Context 1: odd sherds all over, almost certainly medieval, mainly at north end, butt those further south may be odd strays from context 2. North group is on a large roddon. In fact six medieval, four Roman. A. Rogerson (NAU). WPP BC (S1).
Context 2: at 5137 1244 sparse Roman concentration in distinct dark-stained patch of silt. Some organic matter ploughed in here but unlikely enough to provide this colour change. One or three scraps animal bone, but some modern material including china. Sparse slag and fired clay, presumably fairly recent. Not on or adjacent to obvious roddon.
40 x 20m approximately 5-6 feet (1.5 - 1.8m) OD. WPP 23 (S2).
R. Silvester (NAU), 30 November 1983.
23 October 1984. Context 2 extended to west, additional area 53m east to west x 71m north to south.
Sparse to moderate scatter of Roman pottery in dark stained silt, although pottery beyond stained area, over and around a small roddon. WPP 23 (S2).
For full details of wares, flint types etc see Fenland Folders (S3).
R. Silvester (NAU), 23 October 1984.
