Full Description
Barn. Apparently formerly belonging to Wereham Hall (now demolished). Of mixed carrstone, flint and brick, on a plinth of the same materials. Carrstone galleting. Brick slit windows. Cart-door on west flanked by two stepped buttresses of 16th century brick? (very like thin tiles). Traces of brick-edged window in apex of north gable above a string course. Roof renewed.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU) 25 May 1977.
In fact this barn could not have had anything to do with the hall, as the latter only dated from 1832 on this site.
Barn seen in passing by E. Rose (NLA) 7 April 1993.
In very poor condition, roof collapsing; derelict.
Permission granted to demolish May 1997.
Material to be used in walls and new houses on site.
Photographic record made of exterior. Buttresses to west probably not as early as suggested in 1977, but a 17th century date for the barn is still possible. A few fragments of reused limestone visible in the west wall.
E. Rose (NLA) 16 May 1997.
Barn noted in passing as demolished, houses on site, base of north wall alone remains as garden wall.
E. Rose (NLA) 18 July 2000.
Architects plans (1995) in file.
