Summary

A Mesolithic microlith, a Neolithic flint leaf arrowhead and three Neolithic axeheads were found here before 1974. Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey recovered concentrations of worked flint, prehistoric burnt flint, bone and one fragment of prehistoric pottery. A Late Neolithic polished stone axehead was also found here.

Various objects recovered by F. Curtis (Curtis Field 14; old O.S fields 722 and 722a; Context 1), including:
1 Mesolithic microlith found between 1953 and 1960. An obliquely blunted point identified from NCM photograph (Film 2 Frame 20).
1 Neolithic leaf arrowhead.
3 Neolithic flint axes, one of which polished.

Scatter over field 722a and field 722 now amalgamated. Also around Context 2 projecting into east field.

Context 2 at 6908 9022.
Combination of sparse flint, sparse pot boilers, and odd fragments bone. On side of ridge which is more sandy than others in field. 37m x 36m. FWL 151.

Context 3 at 6906 9040.
Concentration pot boilers sparse to moderate, on side of ridges and in peat filled hollow from which peat has almost disappeared. 33m x 18m. FWL 152.

Context 4 at 6904 9035.
Concentration of pot boilers, moderate, very sparse flint, sparse bone, one prehistoric sherd. On ridge edge of chalky
loam. 34m x 24m. FWL 153.

Context 5 at 6902 9026.
Concentration of pot boilers, sparse to locally moderate and flint very sparse. On side of ridge. 28m x 21m. FWL 154.

Context 6 at 6898 9039.
Moderate concentration of pot boilers, odd flakes flint, on fairly flat chalky loam ridge just emerging from peat. 38m x 31m FWL 155.

Finds identification.
Polished stone axehead, Late Neolithic. Made from a fine-grained rock, dark grey with a faint wavy pattern (petrology no. N324). The cutting edge is extensively chipped and the butt is shattered. (S5)
