Summary

Cropmarks of an approximately circular enclosure with several interrupted spaces in its perimeter are visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs. It has previously been suggested that this feature might be a Neolithic causewayed enclosure, but this is now thought unlikely. The site is marked as a heath and rabbit warren on an 18th century map, so it is possible that the cropmarks instead relate to this use.

Civil Parish HAINFORD, BROADLAND, NORFOLK

Map

Soilmark on RAF vertical air photograph of subcircular enclosure, western side obscured by field boundary. Enclosure defined by pale bank (bank?) on south and east interrupted in three or four places: north and west sides not clear.
Dark line (ditch?) outside bank, clearest on south side, probable on north, possible on east.
Enclosure is about 100m across. Small pale blob in centre may be a mound.
Suggested as a Neolithic 'interrupted ditch enclosure'.
Located on edge of area shown on (S1) as 'Hainford Heath and Warren'.
Information from NCM.

1997. Aerial Photograph Interpretation.
Aerial photograph transcriptions by Royal Commission on the Historical Monument of England as part of the 'Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic Project'.
These transcriptions do not support the idea that this is a causewayed enclosure; it is relatively small and continously ditched apart from a single possible entrance.
See publication (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).
