Full Description
Old brick and tile works. Not accesible at time of visit as fields to south under crop (road shown on OS not there now) and apparently wooded over. Pit on west side, supposed to contain a limekiln in excellent condition, but no trace found now a refuse compactor station. Some ruins of flint walling on edges and in wood on west side.
Visited E. Rose (NAU) 20 April 1978.
County Hall confirms limekiln still there, but outside perimeter fence. E. Rose (NAU).
Survey in Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Soceity files, Bridewell Museum. Remarkable kiln with 2 pointed tunnels to central chamber; pug mill; coal store; mess room. Built in 19th century, disused 1936. Samples of bricks in Bridewell Museum. See (S1).
The limekiln has a hoisting shaft which contained an electric lift. There was a second curved entrance for a draught. After 1934 the top was narrowed to conserve heat. Both lime and brickworks founded between 1845 and 1864. Rare square pug mill and unexplained circular brick lined pit. E. Rose (NAU).
April 1987. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description:
Disused limekiln. Between 1841 and 1964. Brick surrounded by soil. Square by plan. Barrel-vaulted chamber with opposing entrances (one blocked). Central pot with 3 chutes and air holes. Later gault brick shaft added to south east side believed to have contained an electric sack hoist.
