March/ April 1999. Metal detecting. Context 2 at location [1].
Middle Saxon/Late Saxon Convex sided strap-end in very good condition, with unusual decoration. At the top it is cut straight across with two rivet holes separated by a V-shaped notch. Below, engraved decoration fills the entire strap end and is symmetrical both top-to-bottom and left-to-right. In the centre is a lozenge with a drop shape abova and below and a curvilinear ornamanet around. At the tip is an unusual head terminal, now rather worn, with blind drilled dots on the eyes and ears.
Very nice object. Dates to the 9th century.
Polaroid taken.
Identified by H. M. Geake (NCM) May 1999.
K. Sussams (NCM) 18 May 1999.
