NHER 2920 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of a medieval to post medieval road and associated field boundaries

An old road is marked on Bryant's 1826 map of Norfolk (S1). This road is visible as a cropmark on Unit aerial photographs, where it is visible to TF 9858 1990. The road may be continued further by a field boundary, possibly ending at TF 9891 1920. The northern end of the road appears as double ditched cropmark.

Cropmarks of a medieval to post medieval road and associated field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S13). The area of this site has been extended to include the full length of the road cropmarks and the adjacent field boundaries. Cropmarks of a ditch defined road or track is intermittently visible on a northwest to southeast alignment. This road is marked on Bryant’s 1826 county map (S1) and an 1829 plan of North Elmham (S14). It is flanked by field boundary ditch cropmarks. Some of these are arranged perpendicular to the road, whilst others are aligned parallel to the Dereham to North Elmham road which lies a short distance to the west. The field pattern is similar to that shown on the 1829 plan. Isolated linear ditch cropmarks of unknown date, possibly also field boundaries, are present within this group of cropmarks.
