Summary

An early 17th century four-storey warehouse built of brick with stone dressings, and with extensive brick cellars. A late 17th century engraving shows a four storey watch tower attached to the side of the warehouse, which is now used as offices.

April 1984. Field Observation.
South side exterior briefly seen by E. Rose (NAU). Gable wall towards south with lower extension running to west. Gable has on three levels small windows with stone frames, rectangular, much altered by 19th-century cart loading doors etc.

Warehouse, basically three blocks of 16th to 17th century date with some reused stonework, remodelled in the 19th century.
Extensive cellars dating from the 18th century and one which seems 16th century. The cellars extend under adjacent properties.

Revised listing (S1) states that an engraving of around 1680 (H. Jones after Henry Bell) shows a square lookout tower attached to the east side. The sign on the south face of the warehouse used to read 'P Cordlandt Dry Storage'. Used until around 1979 as a wine store. At the time the Listing was revised (1993) the building was an architect's office.

Excerpt of current Listing Description:
"Warehouse, now offices. Early 17th century, considerably altered since, particularly in mid 19th century. Brick with stone dressings and slate roof. Engraving by H. Jones after Henry Bell, c.1680, shows a square look-out tower attached to east side. Four storeys. Central 20th-century door. One renewed window right and left under glazed brick segmental arches. West corner with re-used stone quoins to ground floor. First floor with renewed loading door left of centre shares a segmental arch with a top-hung casement to its left...Gabled roof. Interior: Ground floor with two blocked round brick arches to east wall and a third in north wall. Remainder mainly late 20th century except for extensive brick 17th-century cellars. Three parallel elliptically-vaulted ranges running east-west, linked at intervals. One part has plain ribbing…"
