Summary

Features and finds were discovered at this location during the construction of houses. Excavated features included Middle and Late Saxon ditches and a Late Saxon pottery kiln. The pottery kiln produced Thetford-type wares. Finds included a Roman roof tile, an Early Saxon brooch and sherds of Middle and Late Saxon pottery.

1975. Field Observation.
Observation during development of former allotments.
At least two features containing Ipswich ware.
Fragment of head of square headed Early Saxon brooch, found in disturbed soil above the Middle Saxon layers and dated to 6th century.
Iron 'linen-heckle' prong and iron ?bucket fitting.
Also spread of Thetford type ware and some abraded medieval.

October 1975. Excavation.
Kiln damaged by modern disturbance, producing Thetford-type ware. Two arches survived. Stoked from east, and west end destroyed. Overlay a north to south aligned ditch containing Thetford type ware and much burnt wattle impressed daub. Three post-holes and unstratified Ipswich ware, and one fragment tegula. No medieval pot found.
