Full Description
19 October 1978. Visited.
Ruined by incursion of sea in 1382. Foundations washed out 1760. House called "Captain's Haunt" now stands on site. OS claim fragments of churchyard wall in garden wall - they presumably mean the west wall which has old flint and brick, but which would seem later than 1382 - presumably the yard would however have been kept up after the church
was ruined. Owner of house says skeletons were found when cesspit in southwest corner of garden was dug, and when pipes laid along road.
Outside back door stands cross socket stone in Perp style found under doorstep of house: cross perhaps erected when church ruined? Interesting to note that local people believe that 18th century brick barn on opposite side of road is the church, because of the so-called prophecy of Mother Shipton about Keswick Church becoming a barn when Bacton
Abbey becomes a farm.
