Summary

Cropmarks of an 'enclosure' visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 are most likely to be the product of modern agricultural activity. They have, however, also been interpreted as the ditch of a medieval moated site.

The cropmarks described above are visible on aerial photographs taken in June and July 1946 (S1-2 respectively), at approximately TG 2540 3695. Their appearance, particularly on the July photographs, suggests that they are a result of modern agricultural activity, as they seem to overlie other agricultural marks in the field. There also seems to be no obvious reason for the cropmarks having 'reversed', as suggested above; this phenomenon is typically seen in shallow soils over chalkland. In addition, the trapezoidal plan of the enclosure seems unusual for a moated site. On the basis of the consulted aerial photographs, therefore, and in the absence of any other evidence for a moat or other type of enclosure, the cropmarks seem unlikely to be of archaeological significance. Consequently, other than defining the extent of the site, the cropmarks have not been mapped by the NMP.
