Map

Mill House (Ordnance Survey) by site of wind mill marked on (S1).
E. Rose (NAU), 31 May 1979.

Wind mill, apparently on this site, shown on late 16th century map of Rising Chase (copy NAU).
E. Rose (NAU), 1 May 1981.

Postmill was replaced by a tower mill in 1815. Last used 1900.
E. Rose (NAU), 22 March 1982.

Mill house on site, now veterinary hospital, would fit a date of 1900; it has two large millstones at the gate.
In front of the house a folly formed of stone blocks and a window in Decorated style which however appears to be modern, mostly concrete. Other stone block walls in garden, and flower beds are edged with tracery fragments. According to (S2) some blocks are inscribed EASTGATE EDWARD III 27 1377 AD 1800 referring to the demolition of the East Gate of Kings Lynn in 1800 and the reuse of its side walls as parapets. The parapets were removed in 1900 and the stone brought here. Inscriptions not found at time of visit, but [1] confirms they are still prsesent but hidden by plants.
E. Rose (NLA), 16 November 2001.

According to (S3) there was also a horse mill on this site. Sale particulars from 1808 mention a mill house and granary and particulars from 1809 also note a stable and other outbuildings. The mill appears on Hexham's map of King's Lynn from 1588. (S4) details the tower mill erected on the site in 1815 and describes it as brick built, of five storeys with a fantail. Sale particulars from 1866 record a horse mill and outside driving apparatus for steam power when required, and describes the mill house as 'consisting of a Keeping Room, Parlour, Kitchen, Wash House (with an excellent pump of water), Pantry, Store Room and four Sleeping Rooms, Servant's Room ... a Grass Pightle and Garden partly walled in and planted with choicer Fruit Trees, containing One acre, more or less, with Stable, Piggeries and other outbuildings thereto belonging'. A 'quite new' building intended to house a steam mill is mentioned in particulars of 1897.
The First Edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map (S5) labels this site as Windmill (Corn), and the circular tower can be clearly seen on this map. However by 1904 (S6) the site is marked as Windmill (Disused), although the circular tower is still present - this has gone by 1927 (S7).
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 15 May 2019.
