Summary

The site of a 19th century brickworks, in part depicted on historical maps, is also evident as the earthworks of a series of pits, identified during field visits and visible on visualised lidar data. It has been suggested that the same site may have been used for clay extraction during the Roman period, to supply the pottery industry based at Brampton Roman town. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that the earthworks still survive.

The 19th century brickworks and kiln described above, which is in part depicted on historical maps such as the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S1), is also evident as the earthworks of a series of pits visible on visualised lidar data (S2). They have been mapped by extent. It has been suggested that the same site may have been used for clay extraction during the Roman period, to supply the pottery industry based at Brampton Roman town (see S3, and discussion in project report S4). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that the earthworks still survive.
