Map

Cropmarks of irregular enclosures askew to present field pattern.
E. Rose (NAU), 10 January 1978.

The site has been extended to the west and therefore the centre of the site has been altered from TG 4030 2590 to TG 4012 2590.

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of post medieval field boundaries and drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Calthorpe Broad, Ingham (S1-S5). The site is centred on TG 4012 2590.

Running from TG 4030 2598 to TG 4014 2577 is a curvilinear drainage channel, which sometimes consists of a two parallel drains. A series of curvilinear drains feed into these main channels. To the north this appears to link into the system of post medieval drains which are still extant. The drainage pattern seems to have altered at some point as the double ditched drain appears to be overlain by a more rectilinear drain layout. None of these drainage features visible within the eastern area of the site are marked on the available historic maps, although it seems likely that they are all post medieval in date. The western part of the site consists of a series of curvilinear and rectilinear field boundaries and drains. Some of these boundaries are marked on the 1823 Ingham Enclosure map (S6) and the cropmarks reveal additional field divisions within this earlier layout. Again there seems to be two possible phases of boundaries and drains; curvilinear and rectilinear, the latter presumably representing later reorganisation of the fields.

The are few fragmentary cropmarks which do not completely fit onto this pattern of post medieval field boundaries and drains, such as the ditches centred on TG 4007 2598. It is possible that these represent earlier and undated field boundaries.
S. Massey (NMP), 31 September 2005.
