Summary

Fieldwalking in 1976 identified a significant concentration of post-medieval pottery sherds and tile fragments at the western end of this field, with the presence of wasters suggesting that this was probably waste from a nearby production site. Subsequent geophysical surveys undertaken in 1977 and 2011 identified the probable sites of several kilns, although so far no excavation has taken place to confirm the nature and condition of any surviving remains (see NHER 9406 for further details). A systematic fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey undertaken in 2011 recovered objects that were mostly of post-medieval date, with earlier material limited to a prehistoric flint flake, a Middle Saxon pottery sherd and a medieval brick. The post-medieval finds included pottery sherds, roof tiles, clay tobacco pipe fragments, a single coin and several other metal objects.
