Summary

A dispersed group of linear ditches and a linear bank is visible on aerial photographs. For the most part the date of the features is not known, but a post medieval date seems probable. Most are likely to represent former field boundaries, but a number of possible trackways are also evident. Some features may relate to the landscape pre-dating Beeston Park (NHER 30432).

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 3412 2179 to TG 3365 2186.

The cropmarks of a possible trackway described above form part of a much more extensive group of dispersed linear boundaries visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S9). Although they are too dispersed and fragmentary to interpret in any detail, or with any degree of certainty, most share the orientation of the modern field pattern and are likely to represent post medieval field boundaries. Two ditches in the southeastern corner of the site (at TG 3419 2129) correspond with boundaries depicted on Barton Turf Tithe Map (S10), so were clearly in use in the 19th century. A number of possible trackways are also evident, including the example described above. Some features, particularly those located within Beeston Park (NHER 30432), might represent elements of the pre-park landscape.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 7 June 2007.
