Summary

A post medieval icehouse covered by a large earthen mound survives in this location. The mound is tree covered with a straight wall of 19th century brick projecting from soil on the east side suggesting the location of the entrance. Presumably the icehouse relates to Shipdham Place to the south.

Map

Icehouse; in mound.
Marked on architects plan of adjacent site.
E. Rose (NAU) 25 January 1980.

Visit by E. Rose (NAU).
Mound is 6m (20ft) high (9m (30ft) high on east from bed of old pond) one of the largest icehouse mounds in Norfolk.
Covered in grass and mature trees but damaged by children sliding down. Straight wall of 19th century brick projecting from soil on east side suggests entrance is here and has been deliberately filled in. Formerly a building to east now removed and then a long chain of ponds, now dry, surrounded by brick walls and features. These were in the garden of the rectory, now demolished, but were they originally part of the grounds of Shipdham Place to south?
E. Rose (NAU) 29 June 1990.

June 1996.
Investigation by Norfolk County Council in advance of disposal of this plot of land.
Hole 2.7m (9ft) deep dug on east side exposing wall noted above, but no entrance found.
See letter in file.
D. Gurney (NLA) 14 June 1996.

2002.
Icehouse is apparently still intact, but the garden fetaures to the east have been destroyed in making a new residence.
They are under separate ownership to the icehouse.
E. Rose (NLA) 18 february 2002.
