Full Description
3 March 1983. Fenland Fieldwalking.
Context 1.
Odd sherds of medieval pottery from large field.
Context 2 at [1]. Under wheat so impossible to distinguish soil discolouration. On both sides and top of roddon. 90m north-to-south x 40m east-to-west at 2.4m (8ft) OD.
Medium density of medieval, sparse post medieval, sparse bone, medium shell, some building rubble, no slag.
Medieval pottery over whole length but post medieval tends to concentrate towards north end.
Context 3 at [2]. Less than 60m north-to-south x 40m east-to-west at 2.4m (8ft) OD under wheat. Material on top roddon and by sides.
Medium density medieval pottery, sparse post medieval, sparse animal bone, occasional shells.
Building rubble abundant.
Both medieval pottery and rubble fade out in same place.
Context 4 at [3]. On top and particularly west side of low roddon (not on east side). About 40 m north-to-south x 25m east-to-west at 2.4m (8ft) OD.
Post medieval material tends to be at north end.
Abundant medieval pottery.
Sparse post medieval, sparse shell and animal bone with slag.
Some building rubble.

Identified by H. Geake (NCM):
Small, delicate horse harness pendant. Sub-circular, slightly domed, with cut-out quatrefoil in centre and suspension loop
above. 13th/14th century. Polaroid taken by NCM.
Two-piece medieval strap end. Cast front and sides with nicely modelled profile animal head and thin sheet back-plate attached by two rivets. Animal head is neatly finished on both front and back, and resembles those on Late medieval vessel spouts. It has a circular hole drilled in its ear. See for comparison Dress Accessory no.614, of similar construction. Polaroid taken by NCM.
