Summary

Human skeletal remains, probably comprising five individual burials, and traces of coffins were found during works west of Stiffkey church in 1955. They were probably from part of the medieval churchyard associated with St Mary's Church (NHER 1887).

14 June 1955; by coast road, 60cm (2 feet) below surface. 68.5m (75 yards) west of Stiffkey Church. Human remains; suggestion of wooden coffin with one found while digging trenches for water mains. Probably extra-mural part of medieval churchyard. Report by C. F. B. Wells.

1.Fairly sturdy man aged about 25 to 30.

2. Woman about 25 to 30, femur strongly platymeric and a squatting facet on tibia. Might be Anglo-Saxon.

3. 6 year old child, fragment of femur only.

4. Probably female, aged 25 plus, fragment of left iliac bone (cannot come from 1 or 2).

5. Probably male fragment of united occipital bone or left parietal bone. Not 1 or 2 and probably not the same individual as 4.
