Summary

A ring ditch, possibly representing the site of a Bronze Age round barrow, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Although no finds have been recovered, its general character and its topographic position, close to a probable palaeochannel (also visible as a cropmark), fit this interpretation of the site.

Map

One ring ditch.

July 2007. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TM 3986 9760 to TM 3985 9762.

The ring ditch described above is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TM 3985 9762. Although no dating evidence has been recovered, and a variety of interpretations are possible for such sites, it seems most likely that the ring ditch represents the site of a Bronze Age round barrow. Its general character and isolation fit this interpretation, as does its location adjacent to the cropmarks of a probable palaeochannel (also visible on the aerial photographs but not mapped). There may be further archaeological cropmarks in the vicinity, but nothing was identified that was certain enough to warrant mapping.

The ring ditch is somewhat oval in plan, measuring approximately 13.5m long and 12m wide. Traces of a possible outer ditch are visible on its northeast side.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 July 2007.
