Cropmarks of a field system of probable late Iron Age to Roman date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S8). The area of these cropmarks has been considerably extended to the west and now includes cropmarks previously recorded as part of NHER 11668. Cropmarks of a road previously recorded as part of this site are now recorded as NHER 49668 and post medieval field boundaries as NHER 49669. The central grid reference for this group of cropmarks has been adjusted from TG 4112 0351 to TG 4085 0354. Cropmarks of rectilinear fields are present on a north-west to south-east axis. These are arranged along a trackway or double ditched field boundary that extends intermittently for at least 930m between TG 4051 0378 and TG 4120 0313. The trackway or field boundary partly overlaps a ring ditch cropmark relating to a Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 11668) towards its north-west end. Most of the fields in the field system are rectilinear in plan but few are sufficiently complete for their dimensions to be determined. The most complete of these is located in the south-east of the group and is defined by double ditches or narrow trackways on three of its sides. It measures 300m by 180m in plan. It is possible that the road cropmark (NHER 49668) which crosses the north-east side of this group of cropmarks on a roughly north-west to south-east alignment may be related to the field system. The alignment of the field system and trackway cropmarks is similar to extensive areas of late Iron Age to Roman field systems to the north-west (NHER 49381, 6096) and north-east (NHER 21271). It is likely that they form part of the same planned landscape and also date from this period.
J. Albone (NMP), 11 July 2007.
