Full Description
Tumulus marked by Ordnance Survey (S1) in Salthouse Heath Plantation (formerly Cley Common).
Difficult to find.
L. V. Grinsell and R. R. Clarke (NCM).
January 1974. Visit.
Unlocated in dense rhododendron undergrowth in wood.
This barrow is likely to be the site of the excavation carried out in October 1913 by [1], which R.R. Clarke (NCM) places at site NHER 6204. Described as 9m (30 feet) diameter, 1.8m (6 feet) high. At about 1.5m (5 feet) deep some small pieces of pottery, on one of which was the mark of a rounded band. Dated as Bronze Age at Colchester Museum, apparently now lost. See (S2).
A. J. Lawson (NAU), 30 January 1974.
Material from excavation now in NCM, box is dated 1914 not 1913.
E. Rose (NAU).
Shown on (S3) - in about 1850 was 14.6m diameter and 1.1m high, and ploughed.
Information from (S4).
R. J. Rickett (NAU), 31 May 1990.
May 1994. Visit.
Situated in Taylor's Wood, at present under cover of scrub. This renders site difficult to recognise. However a grant aided woodland management scheme is currently being undertaken with no replanting on the mound itself.
H. Paterson (NLA), 23 May 1994.
1995. Schedule amended.
Scheduling description says 0.6m high, 17m wide.
Information from (S5) and (S6).
E. Rose (NAU), 17 November 1995.
Note (S7) in file.
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Site of Bronze Age barrow within woodland at Cley Common. The NMP Project has not mapped the barrow mound as the monument was obscured by tree coverage on all of the available aerial photographs.
S. Massey (NMP), 7 May 2003.
