Summary

Inititally thought to be a Roman marching camp, further examination of aerial photographs of the area confirm that this is an ancient river course. This may have been an ancient chanel of the River Wensum. A field boundary cutting across a meander gives the impression of the corner of a rectangular enclosure. Further rectangular enclsoures are visible as cropmarks and are probably undated field boundaries.

E. Rose 1978 (NAU).

23 July 1980.
NAU air photographs by D. Edwards show that in fact the above feature is an ancient river course. A recent field boundary cutting across a meander gives the impression of the corner of a rectangular enclosure. The rest of the rectangle seems to have been imagined from various differences of soil colour. Informant [3] suggests this may be an ancient channel of the Wensum. However there are small rectangular cropmarks overlying the channel, and it is to these that the county number now applies.
E. Rose (NAU) and D. Edwards (NUA), 14 June 1982.

May 2013.
HER polygon expanded to take in the whole extinct channel. Reexamination of the photographs suggests the rectangular enclosure mentioned above does not exist, however a series of rectangular enclsoures are evident in the southernmost part of the field. These are probably undated field boundaries.
K. Powell (HES), 17 May 2013
