Map

12 April 1988. Visit.
Brick house of two storeys. South facade four widely spaced bays with central late Georgian doorcase between bays and in line with stack. Clear reduction in width of wall at level of upper floor. Demolition of rear extension at northeast corner has revealed wooden post, only 2m high, with expansion of integral bracket supporting beam hidden in east
gable wall. Post rises only 25cm above this and is mortised into wallplate of north wall, with mortises for an arched wallbrace. A second wallplate has been placed against this for the extension, and an arched brace curves out into the latter - is it the original brace reused to support extension roof? Walling above extension is of 20th century brick, not 18th/19th century as rest. Interior not fully stripped. Ground floor ceiling beams plain, joists rest partly in brickwork and partly on beams set against walls. Stack seems to belong to older period of house as it narrows abruptly on upper floor,
but fireplaces have plain wooden bressumers of rough type, not early. Inglenook fireplaces. Timber framed upstairs partitions of late date, as is roof. Therefore timber framed house, originally single storey with low attic and steep pitched roof. Date problematical - 17th century? or early 18th if stack contemporary and not inserted. Clad in brick and present upper floor and partitions added late 18th/early 19th century. Not possible to judge extent of original house without stripping. Derelict at present.
