Summary

Fenland fieldwalking here in 1985 recovered sherds of Late Saxon and medieval pottery along with pieces of animal bone and shell.

4 April 1985. Fieldwalking, well weathered ploughsoil.

From northernmost field (area now recorded as Context 5:
Context 1: general scatter of medieval sherds, mainly western third of field. Site TYS AC.
Context 2: at [1]. Concentration medieval/late medieval sherds, sparse, bone and shell few bits only, set in matrix of grey soil with abundance of post medieval debris, to such extent that difficult to detect early material. On roddon. 50m north-south x 29m east-west at 2.7m OD. Site TYS 2. Also two Late Saxon sherds.
Context 3: at [2]. Concentration sparse medieval pot, little bone and shell, on edge hollow beside fen dyke, similar to droves elsewhere but not apparently in this case 36m east-west x 20m north-south at 2.4m OD. Site TYS 3.
Context 4: at [3]. Medieval sherds over two field sand roddon. Medieval sherds sparse to moderate, latter locally; shell moderate in places, bone sparse. Very little modern. In small field concentrated patches of shell ploughed up. 80m northwest-southeast x 40m northeast-southwest at 2.7m OD. Site TYS 4.
Some of Context 3 reidentified as eight Thetford Ware sherds.
