Summary

A sizeable ex-Hare farm with the expected comprehensive range of buildings, surveyed by the UEA in the 1980s. Construction dates generally from the mid 19th century with the exception of the stable block and odd older incorporated walls which are probably late 18th to early 19th century. The existing barn seemed to be partly constructed from re-used timber, perhaps from the timber framed barn, which, according to the estate survey of 1847, needed replacing. Other features included a forge, an upper storey granary and a saw pit, now filled in.

Map

August 1980. Visited.
Saw pit (Ordnance Survey). Now filled in, but farmworkers remember the seasoning shed here.
E. Rose (NAU), 7 August 1980.

However, the undated UEA farm survey in file, which is probably also of the 1980s, notes that the saw pit was inside one of the farm buildings. It also adds: Barn 19th century brick but retaining one gable wall from an earlier timber-framed barn (a survey of 1847 noted it needed replacing); brick granary also 19th century; stables and shelter sheds of same date incorporating some older walls; forge with shoeing area retaining many original fittings; and other buildings. A sizeable Hare Estate farm showing the mid 19th century reconstruction of the older buildings (S1) in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 22 March 2007.
