Summary

Sometime around 1979 three Neolithic stone axeheads were found here. Subsequent fieldwalking in 1984 recorded a scatter of prehistoric worked flints including some of Mesolithic date. In addition, Faden’s map of 1797 shows a wind pump once stood at this location.

Good conditions, young winter wheat, weathered soil.
MTW AM/MTW AN (c. 1; general scatter).
Odd flints scattered across sandier parts of Stubbs Hill island. These sites were not included in the final publication.
Flint includes Mesolithic pieces - F. Healy (NAU).

The 'lost axe' noted above has now been found.

It is the cutting edge of half of a broken flint axe of unusually large size. Fresh condition but recent chipping and faintly iron stained. Break is ancient and butt has been reflaked in antiquity. Very high standard of workmanship, with shallow controlled flaking reducing area to be polished to a minimum. Neolithic 3000-2000 BC.
